Coaches Chase Bishop, Andrew Chobany and the Life Lions soccer program has advanced once again to the Regional Tournament, this time by dramatic fashion and in the remaining seconds. In what was a great game between two outstanding teams (Gainesville and Life), it came down to the final seconds as Life prevailed with an incredible goal as time ran out. With under 12 seconds remaining and the score tied 1-1, Juan Ambriz collected a pass in the center of the field where he quickly passed it outside to Eric Portillo who made a pin-point accurate pass to #10 David Lopez who buried the volley into the outstretched hands of Gainesvilles goalie into the top right corner of the goal. It was an amazing ending to what was great efforts by both teams. “Gainesville has a great team and played extremely hard, neither team deserved to lose this game with the efforts the kids gave” Bishop stated. “We were very fortunate to come out of this one with a win, that last play was just crazy, we practice situations but to see it play out in this fashion was just fun to watch”.
With the win, the Lions improved to 18-7-1 overall and are the 3rd seed out of a very tough district 8-4A. This is the forth straight year the Lions have advanced to the Regional Tournament and hold a remarkable 84-14-3 record over these last four seasons. “Bishop and Chobany just model consistency and work ethic, they have a great system in place” Thrush stated. “After graduating a once in a lifetime class, to come back and do this with a relatively young team just shows how good Bishop and Chobany are and we have great kids. Its not surprising though, Bishop is on that field everyday with the MS kids during 2nd period athletics getting them ready for this moment and Chobany (Head JV Coach) executes the varsity plan with the JV and does a great job getting them ready for their time”.
The Lions will play perennial powerhouse San Elizario at 6:00 pm Friday, April 13th at The Birdville Athletic Complex 9200 Mid Cities Blvd
NRH, TX 76180.
